Education
House of Charity has been reaching out to educate community leaders, students, civic groups, church groups, businesses, and volunteers about our programs since 2000. Day by Day clients in particular, share their stories of drug use, what it is like to be homeless and hungry, lose their jobs, or families. Those on parole talk about what life was like in prison. Our volunteers have always been impressed with what they learn and are inspired by the demonstration of courage.
Teens tend to gain powerful insight into the reality of why our clients chose drugs or alcohol. The ‘storytellers’ receive many letters of thanks from these teens who were positively affected by their stories. One student wrote, “All the things you said, believe it or not, really did have an effect on me. Now more than ever I’m dead set on not trying or using drugs.
The words of encouragement serve to strengthen and motivate clients, especially those in the Day by Day program, to continue making constructive change in their lives. Telling their stories boosts confidence, increases self-awareness and reinforces their choice of leading a sober life. We are eager to increase this educational mission, growing the number of young people touched by these stories, as well as transforming lives of clients’ residing at House of Charity.
