House of Charity could not fulfill its mission without the generosity and dedication of thousands of volunteers each year.
In 2015, 1,966 volunteers donated more than 3,700 hours of their time helping to prepare and serve meals at the Food Centre. According to Independent Sector, a leadership forum for charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs, the estimated dollar value of volunteer time in 2015 was $23.07 per hour. At that rate, the amount of time that volunteers have dedicated to House of Charity in 2015 can be valued at over $86,000. Of course, our volunteers’ tireless efforts in the kitchen and the warmth with which they greet guests are priceless!
At House of Charity, we strive to create a sense of community for our residents and Food Centre guests. By sharing their time, smiles and kind words, volunteers connect with our guests and each other and demonstrate how the spirit of giving can transform lives.
We rely on volunteers to help us prepare and/or serve close to 350 meals every day of the year.
Less frequently, we identify special projects, such as painting, to help keep our facilities clean, safe, and comfortable for residents and guests. We also have limited opportunities for individuals to help with administrative tasks.
