Recent reports by the Feeding America Network of Food Banks show that while many individuals have a regular income, over 11% of those living in Hennepin County fall into the category of having low or very low food security. This number expands outside of the traditional expectation that individuals experiencing hunger are generally homeless and unemployed. Hunger Solutions reported that an average of 36% of metro area food bank visitors have at least one working individual in their household.  Research specific to House of Charity performed in the first two quarters of 2016 has revealed that at least 42% of Food Centre diners have stable housing and 47% are employed full-time, part-time, or occasionally. Our diners often have to choose between paying for housing and other necessary expenses, or buying a sustainable amount of food for themselves and their families.

When surveyed in the first half of 2016, about 58% of Food Centre diners at House of Charity stated that the meal they received at HOC would likely be the only food they consumed that day. This means that out of our average of 350 daily Food Centre diners, 203 or more would have gone without food for the day without the meal provided at the House of Charity Food Centre.

125,496 meals were served at the Food Centre in 2016.

How you can help

With the assistance of 5 to 10 volunteers at each meal, our few paid staff are able to feed more than 10,000 people each month.

Through Second Harvest Food Bank, we purchase protein, vegetables, fruits, and more at extremely reduced rates. USDA commodity foods (beans, pasta, whole chickens) can be as low as 4¢ per pound!

Charitable contributions and grants fund all our public meals. With your help, we will continue to remain as an available source of nutrition for those in need. $10 provides 20 meals. To sponsor an entire lunch service is $175 or $1,225 for one week.
